I warmly welcome everyone to join me on this incredible musical journey. Teaching young students is a profound joy, as music is one of the most meaningful gifts a person can give or receive. Learning the piano not only nurtures creativity, but opens the door for a lifetime of discipline, emotional expression, and personal growth. It is a great joy to guide young students, helping them discover their own voices and develop the skills to become truly extraordinary pianists. Through music, we form a unique connection, one that is more than just the lessons themselves, one that resonates deeply in both teacher and student.
Lessons
A decade ago, Jerry embarked on a teaching journey that has become as integral to his musical identity as his performances. Over the past ten years, he has gained extensive experience working with students of all levels, from beginners at RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music) Level 1 to advanced pianists pursuing their ARCT (Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto) diploma in performance. His passion for teaching shines through the incredible successes of his students, many of whom have achieved first-class honours and first-class honours with distinction in Royal Conservatory of Music examinations and won top prizes in musical competitions. Under Jerry’s dedicated guidance, these young pianists not only develop technical mastery but also discover their own unique voices in music. Jerry’s teaching is rooted in a deep commitment to each student’s growth, nurturing their potential and inspiring them to become extraordinary musicians in their own right.

Would my children be expected to practice everyday?Yes! To take full advantage of Jerry’s lessons, it is crucial to maintain a consistent practising schedule. Homework assigned during lessons are not meant to be done last minute and require a dedicated effort throughout the week. Please be responsible to ensure all practising is done to the best of the student’s ability by the next lesson. As a parent, you will also be expected to help your child with their daily practices, encourage them to complete their work, and ensure that they are having fun! Jerry’s students typically will practise between 45 mins - 3 hours/day depending on their own circumstances. (for leisure, preparing for exams, performances, and/or competitions)
-
How do you structure your lessons? Each lesson is tailored to the individual student, but generally, we focus on technique, repertoire, sight-reading, and performance/exam prep. I also highly encourage musical expression and creativity, helping students connect emotionally with the music.
-
Do you prepare students for exams and competitions?Yes, I prepare students for Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) exams and music competitions. My students have achieved high honours in these areas, and I encourage participation for those who are interested.
-
What age do you recommend starting piano lessons?I typically recommend starting piano lessons around ages 6-7, as this is when children have developed the motor skills, focus, and basic patience needed for learning an instrument. However, I welcome students of all ages, including older beginners.
-
How do you keep parents involved in their child’s progress?I keep parents informed with regular updates on their child’s progress through in person discussion during lessons, and I’m always available for questions or concerns. I also encourage parents to listen to practice sessions and lessons.
-
What do I do if my child loses interest or struggles with motivation? It’s natural for students to experience ups and downs in their motivation. Learning the piano can be a very difficult subject for many students, but upon doing such a challenging task, the rewards of music are truly life-changing! I work closely with students and parents to find repertoire that excites them and to set achievable goals. Sometimes, adjusting practice routines or taking on fun projects can rekindle their enthusiasm.
-
Do you teach music theory/history?No. I do teach basic fundamental music theory during lessons in order for students to learn the connection between the music they are playing and the “behind the scenes” of what makes the music work in the way that it does. For further music theory/history education, I have references to amazing teachers who specialise in those areas, that my students can learn those subjects from. This will be especially important for students taking RCM exams as certificates of these exams require music theory/history co-requisites.
-
What kind of piano should we have at home for practice?A well-tuned acoustic piano is ideal for practice. However, a high-quality digital piano with weighted keys can also work for beginners. Having the right instrument ensures proper development of technique, sound, and expression.
-
What is your teaching approach or philosophy?I focus on nurturing a love for music while helping students build a strong technical foundation. I adapt my teaching style to each student’s strengths and goals to ensure they grow as both musicians and individuals. I believe music is intertwined with life, and the best way to approach music is from our life experiences.

How often are recital and performance opportunities available?I offer an annual piano recital for all my students. This typically happens before the summer break. It is a great chance for students to develop their stage presence and to share the music they have been learning throughout the year. I also encourage my students to attend performance opportunities offered throughout the community, to help develop their confidence and stage experience.
